Schmeichel has already claimed 124 caps and helped the Danish lift the European Championship title in 1992 - he is a figure held in some awe within the squad.

Coach Bo Johansson, who steps down from the job after the tournament, said: "It would not surprise me if Peter went on to try and beat Lothar Matthaus' record number of caps.

"But nor would it surprise me if he abandoned the idea completely. He is always going to do what he wants I think."

Johansson has balanced young with old

Denmark have suffered during their transitional period as new young players have come in to replace the generation led by Schmeichel and the Laudrup brothers.

"I have always tried to mix the group up so we had young players and experienced players together," said Johansson.

Looking ahead to the clash with the Czechs, Johansson said it was not the perfect time to experiment again.

"It may not be a match that means a great deal, but it is still against a very good football team that Denmark has never beaten.

"And we play them in the World Cup qualifying tournament as well, so it has more meaning to us than many people may think."
