![]() | Monday, 19 June, 2000, 15:48 GMT 16:48 UK Schmeichel to carry on ![]() Goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel has dispelled any thoughts of retiring from the international stage. Denmark have lost heavily to both France and Holland at Euro 2000, but the 36-year-old has confirmed that the clash with the Czech Republic on Wednesday will not be the last for his country. Schmeichel said: "I have no intention of retiring from international football yet," the Sporting Lisbon player said. "But I am not aiming to break any records either. I just want to carry on for as long as I can and for as long as I enjoy it."
Coach Bo Johansson, who steps down from the job after the tournament, said: "It would not surprise me if Peter went on to try and beat Lothar Matthaus' record number of caps. "But nor would it surprise me if he abandoned the idea completely. He is always going to do what he wants I think."
"I have always tried to mix the group up so we had young players and experienced players together," said Johansson. Looking ahead to the clash with the Czechs, Johansson said it was not the perfect time to experiment again. "It may not be a match that means a great deal, but it is still against a very good football team that Denmark has never beaten. "And we play them in the World Cup qualifying tournament as well, so it has more meaning to us than many people may think." |
