Moroccan dig at 2006 rivals

Morocco has taken a swipe at England and Germany, two of its rivals to host the 2006 World Cup Finals.

Morocco's 2006 bid committee chairman Driss Benhima said: "If violence happens this summer at Euro 2000 it will certainly change the issue of the vote.

"Countries who can't control their fans should not apply to organise big sports events."

Germany and England, whose fans were responsible for violence at the 1998 World Cup in France, are the European candidates for the 2006 tournament.

Small club

Benhima urged Fifa to prove that hosting the World Cup is not limited to a small "club" of rich industrialised nations.

Countries who can't control their fans should not apply to organise big sports events.

He called on FIFA to be "progressive" and choose an African nation for the first time.

FIFA's executive committee will decide in Zurich on 6 July on the venue for the 2006 Finals, with South Africa and Brazil also in the running.

"We want FIFA to take their responsibilities and to say clearly if we can expect one day to organise the World Cup," said Benhima.

Former French captain and coach Michael Platini, who is now senior adviser to FIFA president Sepp Blatter, has said that South Africa or Morocco should get the chance to host the 2006 World Cup.
