The BBC's head of TV news, Roger Mosey, has become its new director of sport, replacing Peter Salmon. Mr Mosey's duties will include overseeing BBC Sport's move to Manchester, due to begin in 2009.
He was head of TV news since January 2000, responsible for the One, Six and Ten O'Clock news bulletins, Newsnight and BBC News 24.
Mr Salmon quit the BBC in April to become chief executive of independent producer the Television Corporation.
'Exciting time'
A former editor of BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Mr Mosey was the controller of Radio Five Live when it was named Sony National Radio Station of the Year in 1998.
Mr Mosey said: "I'm delighted to be moving to BBC Sport at such an exciting time, after the London Olympics decision and with the World Cup and Commonwealth Games coming up next year."
"I grew up listening to and watching BBC Sport, and I loved my time on Radio Five Live," he added.
"It's essential for the BBC that it's the place people come to for big national sports moments, and I know BBC Sport will continue to deliver that with style."
BBC director general Mark Thompson said: "Roger Mosey's experience and passion will be invaluable in leading the sport division through its imminent and long-term challenges."
