He first signed with Motown at the age of 10

Hall of Fame chairman Hal David said he was "pleased and proud" to honour both Wonder and Brooks.

"Each has contributed mightly to the creative and artistic community, having achieved unprecedented milestones," he added.

"They have raised the standard of music-making to a new level."

Wonder was himself inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1983. The organisation seeks to honour "the accomplishments and lives of those men and women who create the popular songs that serve as the soundtrack of our lives".

The Hall of Fame was founded in 1970, and to be eligible, songwriters must have been active for at least 20 years.

Born Steveland Judkins in 1950, Wonder, who became blind aged seven, first signed with Motown aged 10.

While he has been consistently popular over the decades, he is best regarded for hits from the late 1960s, such as Uptight (Everything's Alright), Superstition, and Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours), and his 1970s albums Innervisions and Talking Book.
