| Monday, 29 April, 2002, 10:50 GMT 11:50 UK Law returns to stage after injury ![]() Doctor Faustus is the first theatre production from Natural Nylon Actor Jude Law will perform in the hit play Doctor Faustus on Monday night after a second injury forced him to cancel a show at London's Young Vic Theatre. A reported hand injury forced Saturday's show to be called off as Law has no understudy. Last month five performances were axed when Law injured his knee on stage. A Young Vic spokeswoman would not go into details about the injury, however she said doctors advised Law not to go on stage. A full refund is being offered to anyone who hoped to see Saturday's show, as the rest of the run is sold out and no more shows can be added on.
It is the first production from the Natural Nylon Theatre Company, founded by Law, his wife Sadie Frost and Ewan McGregor. Critics have given mixed reviews to Law's physical performance of a man who sells his soul to the Devil in return for unlimited earthly delights. The Evening Standard called his performance "compelling", The Independent said he was "magnetic", while The Times called it the most "exciting" and "passionately thought-out production" at the Young Vic since David Lan took over. However the Daily Telegraph said he was "alarmingly lacking in stage energy". Talented Doctor Faustus looks set to transfer to New York next year. Law is one of the UK's most famous actors after starring roles in films like AI - Artificial Intelligence and The Talented Mister Ripley, which he won a Bafta for. The 29-year-old's career started in the TV soap Families before he became a star of the London stage. Law earned a Tony nomination for his 1995 Broadway run in Jean Cocteau's Indiscretions. His first big Hollywood movie was 1997's Gattaca, opposite Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Arts stories now: Links to more Arts stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
