Johnny Depp stars in the Pirates films as Captain Jack Sparrow |
The Pirates Of The Caribbean sequel has become only the third film to make over $1bn (536m) at the global box office. Dead Man's Chest, which stars Johnny Depp, had sold $1.003bn-worth of tickets as of Friday, said its distributors Walt Disney.
This makes it the third highest grossing film of all time, behind Titanic and The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King.
A third film, At World's End, is set to be released next May.
No further rise
Dead Man's Chest has already set a record as the fastest film to reach the $300m (162m) total at the North American box office.
Its total gross dwarfs that of the first film in the series, Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl, which made $656m worldwide.
However, Dead Man's Chest is not expected to rise above Return Of The King's $1.1bn (590m) global total and make it into second place in the all-time takings list.
And it will have a long way to go to match 1997's Titanic, which made $1.8bn (965m) worldwide.
