A nurse who invented a �7 plastic hook for hanging hospital drips from has signed a deal to mass produce his invention. John Edwards came up with the "J-hook" while working at the New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton.
The plastic device is used for hanging drips from curtain rails by beds in wards and replaces conventional drip stands, which cost �130 each.
If the idea takes off, the invention could save the NHS millions and make Mr Edwards rich.
The nurse and his employers recently signed a deal with two Midlands companies that will make and distribute the invention.
Mr Edwards said: "It works by hanging on the curtain rail. It replaces the drip stand.
"You hang the bag of fluid from the curtain rail to the patient."
Mr Edwards, who has been a nurse for nearly 20 years, said it was a case of necessity being the mother of invention.
"I had a patient and a drip and nowhere to put the drip and I looked and the curtain rail was there and I thought I must be able to use that."
