The 6.5 kilometre route, between Middlesbrough and South Lackenby is described as the "missing link" in the National Cycle Network.

Plans are on view at libraries in Grangetown, Eston and Ormesby until 24 September.

Results of the consultation will be available in the libraries and on the council's website.

Existing network

The cycle route is planned to go on and off road starting from Old Middlesbrough Road, South Bank.

It will then lead onto Harcourt Road, on to the dismantled railway line, in Station Road, linking to the existing network route along Eston High Street to the A174 Greystones roundabout.

The council's cabinet member for strategic planning, development and infrastructure, councillor Eric Empson, said: "The route connects local amenities, schools and community facilities in the area with safe direct and pleasant provision that is free from noise, danger and stress from heavy traffic.

"This is an excellent opportunity to use existing off-road facilities where anti-social behaviour has been a concern for local residents. "
