Fighting halts rugby match

CCTV footage of a rugby league match is being checked by police after violence broke out and forced the game to be abandoned in South Yorkshire.

Doncaster were playing Queens ARLF, a side from Leeds, when violence broke out in the east stand of the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster on Saturday.

More than 20 police officers were needed to tackle the violence and three people were arrested.

A police spokeswoman said the vast majority of people were well behaved.

Shane Chalmers, general manager of the Keepmoat Stadium, said: "The Dons challenge cup game against Queens ARLFC was called off due to crowd trouble.

"Rugby prides itself as being a family sport and such instances are very rare."

A meeting has been called to discuss the violence. The Keepmoat management said it would work with the Doncaster team and South Yorkshire Police to ban the fans involved from future matches.

Mr Chalmers added: "The stadium was properly staffed and took action by the book including contacting the police and as such we are pleased with the way our staff handled the situation.

Dave Marshall, chief executive of the Doncaster Dons said: "We are working in partnership with the stadium management company and working closely with the police to investigate this incident."
