Town gets tough on litter louts
Litter by a curb (generic)
Even dropping chewing gum could result in a fine
People who drop litter in Doncaster town centre are risking a 50 fine.

The borough council says it is telling its litter wardens to get tough with offenders. Two fixed penalty notices have already been handed out.

When they were first introduced, the wardens merely gave a warning to litter droppers in the hope they would think twice in future.

But the council says offenders will now be handed a fine in a bid to keep the streets clean.

Chewing gum

As well as watching for litter droppers, the wardens have been issued with a special toolkit to enable them to deal with flyposting.

Stuart Exelby, who is the Doncaster councillor responsible for keeping the streets clean, warns they are moving towards a zero-tolerance approach.

"Littering in all its forms will not be tolerated on the streets of Doncaster," he said.

"Even chewing gum is unacceptable to drop."
