Inner city crime rates slashed
A run down area of Sheffield is celebrating the news that its crime rates have been slashed.

According to South Yorkshire Police's latest figures Burngreave now has lower levels of all types of crime than the city average.

Incidents of house burglaries, drug trafficking, criminal damage and violent crime have all dropped.

John Clark, chief executive of Burngreave New Deal for Communities, which funded a dedicated police team for the area, said the figures were a real boost for residents.

"This is excellent news and demonstrates quite clearly that targeted investment and action does work," he said.

Superintendent Martin Hemingway of South Yorkshire Police added: "The combination of top quality community policing and behind the scenes intelligence gathering is proving extremely effective in Burngreave and we are determined to keep up the momentum to deliver lasting improvements to the local community."
