The funeral of football icon Brian Clough took place in Derby on Thursday. At the request of his family it was a small private ceremony attended by relatives and close friends of Mr Clough, who died last month aged 69.

Members of the public are being offered the chance to attend a memorial service at Derby Cathedral on 21 October.

About 700 guests will attend, including former Derby County and Nottingham Forest players. Loudspeakers relayed the event to people outside.

Sense of celebration

Canon Nicholas Henshall from Derby Cathedral said: "It's a bringing together of different elements of his life.

"We're hoping great sporting personalities and personal friends will read and say things about Brian.

"And it's going to be quite eclectic, it's not going to be a traditional church service. It's going to have a profound sense of celebration about it, making sure it's about Brian not just about anybody."

251 goals

An outdoor ceremony, attended by over 2,000 people, has already been held in Nottingham's Old Market Square.

There have already been calls to rename part of the A52, which connects Nottingham and Derby, in the memory of Mr Clough who died from stomach cancer. .

Born in Middlesbrough, Mr Clough scored a 251 goals in 274 games, also winning two caps for England.

He led Nottingham Forest to successive European Cups in 1979 and 1980.
