John Sentamu's appointment was announced on 17 June

York Minster's College of Canons will meet to ratify Dr Sentamu's appointment which was announced last month.

After the Chapter House meeting the Dean of York will announce the outcome in front of the minster's choir screen.

Dr Sentamu, who is currently the Bishop of Birmingham, will officially become archbishop after a further ceremony in London in October.

The tradition of canons electing bishops and archbishops dates back to 1214 and gives legal validity to the decision made by the Crown.

Dr Sentamu, who will be Britain's first black archbishop, will take up his duties after his enthronement in York Minster on 30 November.
