York Minster's financial woes will top the new dean's agenda

Mr Jones, 59, will have the responsibility of sorting out the financial problems at York Minster when he is installed in a ceremony in June.

Figures obtained by the BBC last month showed that the cathedral overspent by �600,000 in the year to March 2003 amid falling visitor numbers.

In the two previous years the minster recorded an operating deficit of �1,360,000 and stock market volatility also wiped �2m off the value of its investments, accounts show.

Archbishop's delight

The Dean of York is responsible for the running of the cathedral, as well as providing spiritual leadership.

Mr Jones succeeds the Very Reverend Raymond Furnell, who retired last summer.

The Archbishop of York, Dr David Hope, said he was "delighted" with the appointment of Mr Jones, who will take up his new role in June.

"Dean Jones will bring with him a wealth of knowledge and experience and will serve very well the worship, witness and mission of York Minster. I very much look forward to working with him."

Mr Jones said: "I am very much looking forward to coming to live in York and leading the worship and life of York Minster as Dean.

"Our cathedrals are deeply inspiring places, and have much to contribute to today's world.

"So although we love Devon, we are thrilled to be coming to Yorkshire and the wonderful city around the Minster."
