Police hope to prevent scenes like this |
Football hooligans aiming to travel to Portugal in the next few days for the England game are being targeted by Greater Manchester Police. Officers from the force's Football Intelligence Unit will mingle with fans in the hope of spotting troublemakers.
Operation Seaforth aims to stop known hooligans travelling to Faro for the friendly with Portugal.
Hundreds of fans are expected to fly from Manchester Airport for the "high-risk" fixture.
Covert and uniformed officers
About 2,500 tickets have been made available to English fans.
Operation Seaforth will use a combination of plain-clothes officers and uniformed officers to target known hooligans with convictions for football related disorder.
Detective Constable Steve Chisnall said: "Let me assure you that you will be stopped and taken to court if you have convictions of this nature and are attempting to travel to the game through Manchester Airport.
"We will have covert and uniformed officers operating at the airport 24-hours-a-day, who are armed with information and intelligence about hooligans.
"It is a waste of your time and ours to even bother trying to get to the game."
