Transport links need to keep up with the pace of house building |
Nearly 50m has been allocated by the government to improve transport links to boost house building in north London and the Thames Gateway. The 21 schemes include new roads, junctions and bridges, road widening, and landscaping projects.
A new DLR station will be built in Langdon Park in Tower Hamlets, east London, at a cost of 5.7m.
The funding follows a review of housing supply which said infrastructure needed to keep up with the pace of building.
Other projects include 5m spent on public space landscaping and a new pedestrian bridge over the river Lea in Tottenham Hale, north London.
In Hendon, north London, 7m will be spent on replacing the ageing Aerodrome Road rail bridges to allow bus access, and improving cyclist and pedestrian safety.
A new road will be built at a cost of 5m through the Haringey Heartlands brownfield development site in Wood Green, north London, to allow for extra housing.
Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman said: "This new funding will bring real improvements to transport across the south east and will tackle congestion in these communities."
