Carnival attendance was down last year

Organisers London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd have said the route is the same as last year for the August bank holiday weekend event.

There will also be a some pre-carnival events including an infants carnival and a showcase for calypso music.

There will also be more stewards than in previous years for the three-day west London event.

The Metropolitan Police said there will be 80 CCTV cameras to give the force a "birds-eye view" over the whole route.

This year it will also mark 170 years of the end of slavery in Trinidad, where the carnival's roots lie.

The street party, which the organisers say is second only to the Rio Carnival, has attracted more than a million people in the past and generates about �93m.

The number of people attending the event, which is one of the biggest street parties in Europe, was down by 800,000 in 2003 on the year before.

Organisers hope to reverse that trend this year and there will also be an official guide for the first time.

Professor Chris Mullard, from the Notting Hill Carnival Trust, said: "The theme is really about a free London, about free citizens.
