A police force says it has been flooded with calls from people willing to give up their dogs for police work.

Lincolnshire Police say the reaction to their appeal for more dogs has been "amazing".

Almost two dozen dog owners have said they are willing to donate their pets after an appeal on BBC Radio Lincolnshire.

Sgt Barry Gardener of Lincolnshire Police said: "The response has been tremendous - we have even had a Jack Russell offered at the weekend."

Drug sniffers

Some of the dogs being offered include German shepherds, rotweilers and labradors.

Some of the owners say their dogs have just grown too big, while others have got caught in the middle of family break-ups.

The animals will be tested to see if they have the right qualities to join the police dog section.

The ones that meet the grade will be used to help catch escaped prisoners and control disturbances, but could also be used to sniff out drugs and explosives.

The force has also bought an eight-week-old German shepherd, and is asking for helping in choosing a name for the dog.
