The static display will remain in RAF Coningsby

The airplanes in the special display marking the Battle of Britain, which includes Spitfires, Hurricanes and Lancasters, will relocate to Barkston Heath near Grantham in Lincolnshire from RAF Coningsby while a new runway is built.

The move is necessary to prepare RAF Coningsby for the arrival of the new Typhoon Eurofighter.

The visitor's centre at Coningsby in Lincolnshire will remain open, and most of the operations will stay at the air base while the runway work is done.

RAF warrant officer Dick Harmer says: "We hope to move the aircraft over the coming weekend and will move the equipment to support the first-line operations, but everything else will stay at Coningsby.

"The hangar at Barkston is about 50 feet shorter than the one at Coningsby, but it will take all the aircraft," he said.

All the security issues involved with moving the aircraft have been addressed, Mr Harmer said.

The aircraft from the memorial flight travel all over the UK for air shows and other displays.
