Report calls for airport u-turn
Nottingham East Midlands Airport
The airport is at Castle Donington
Councillors are being urged to reverse their rejection of plans to extend a departure lounge at Nottingham East Midlands Airport.

North West Leicestershire Council voted against extending the international departure lounge by 1,800 sq m, making it 40% larger.

However a report from its own officers now suggests the council should reverse the decision.

The issue will be discussed at a meeting on Tuesday night.

Conservative Councillor Tony Saffell, who put forward the original motion to oppose the extension, said the result could go either way because party whips would not intervene.

He said: "I don't think the hand is being forced at the moment.

"It depends on how many people vote each way and, of course, the one limiting factor in the whole thing is that there can be no whip.

"The Labour Party cannot make people vote one way and the Conservatives cannot make anybody vote any other way because it's a planning matter and political parties are banned from having any say at all in planning."
