People across the East Midlands are being asked if they would like to see smoking banned in public places. The Big Smoke Debate is being conducted by the East Midlands Community - a group, including health authorities and environmental health specialists.
The public are being asked if smoking should be banned in places such as restaurants, pubs and shopping centres.
People can give their views by logging onto the website or through an easy to use questionnaire.
The questionnaires are available in local GP surgeries, pharmacies, libraries, and schools. The survey is thought to be the biggest health consultation exercise the East Midlands has ever seen.
It asks whether there should be smoking restrictions in seven public places - cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars, shopping centres, railway and bus stations, taxis and offices.
Health officials think the results will provide invaluable information which could help form future policy.
Rashmi Shukla, Director for Public Health for Eastern Leicester and Leicester City West Primary Care Trust, said: "This is not about whether people smoke but where they smoke.
"This is important because it is asking people what they want to see happen, so go on, tell us what you think."
In a similar survey in London, three-quarters of those taking part said they wanted more restrictions on public smoking.
