Noise protesters target airport
Nottingham East Midlands Airport was 'renamed' Keep You Awake Airport by protesters on Saturday.

Friends of the Earth and local people are campaigning outside the airport about the amount of noise pollution produced by planes at night.

They claim any planned expansion of the airport will aggravate the problem, meaning up to a 120,000 people's sleep could be affected.

Managers at the airport say they try to minimise its environmental impact.

Environmental impact

Callie Lister, from Friends of the Earth in the East Midlands, claimed the number of night time flights was increasing.

She said: "We have very noisy, low-flying freight flights throughout the night every night.

"Also now the cheap flight carriers are beginning to creep into the night schedules so the number of flights in the night is increasing.

"She added: "The choice of name "Keep You Awake Airport" is because so many people have their sleep disturbed."

In a statement the airport said: "We take our responsibilities to the environment and the community in which we are based very seriously.

It added: "We work very hard to minimise our impact on the environment but we respect people's rights to express their opinions."
