Police say they will actively enforce the drinking ban

A ban on street drinking around the war memorial in Hull city centre comes into force on Monday - just days before the Remembrance Sunday service.

The measure has been introduced by Hull City Council to give Humberside Police greater powers to curb drunken behaviour around the cenotaph.

The council said: "This is an area that should be treated with respect.

"We want to ensure that an area designed as a tribute to those who lost their lives maintains its dignity."

Fixed penalties

The introduction of the city's first non-drinking zone follows detailed monitoring of anti-social behavior around the war memorial by the council.

Anyone drinking alcohol in the area must hand it over to a police officer on request or face arrest and would be liable to a fine if convicted.

Fixed penalty notices may also be issued for disorder.

Insp Mick Stevenson, Humberside Police's public order champion for Hull, said: "As part our zero tolerance policy, we will proactively use CCTV to enforce the non-drinking zone."
