Council urges nappy changeover
Parents in Worcester are being invited to learn about the environmental benefits of traditional nappies.

Independent nappy consultants will be at the free sessions, which are being dubbed "nappaccino" mornings.

An estimated 5,000 nappy changes are made from birth to potty and the council is keen to point out the plusses of ditching disposables.

It said that fashions have moved on and that traditional nappies were available in many different styles.

Funky wraps

Carol Trehearn, the waste minimisation promotions officer for Worcestershire County Council, said: "Those who come along can see how fashions have changed from the traditional perceptions about real nappies."

"And they will be able to see the benefits a change may have on the environment."

Ms Trehearn told BBC News Online that some people believe disposable nappies are actually more environmentally friendly than traditional nappies, which need to be repeatedly cleaned with washing agents.

But she said that most parents' ideas about non-disposable nappies were out-of-date.

"You can get a slim-line look or a bulky nappy. There are also funky-looking wraps which can come in elephant prints or rainbow-coloured."

The free sessions are being held at Countryside Centre, Wildwood Drive, Worcester, on 9 March, 13 April and 11 May.
