Campaigners rally for lower limit
Residents are asking how many accidents must take place before the speed limit is lowered in their village.

It is estimated that 16,000 vehicles pass through Marks Tey, Essex, daily, many on their way to Stansted Airport.

This stretch of the A120 currently has a 40 mph limit but many local people want Essex County Council to lower it.

Councillor Rodney Bass said: "Although there are a number of pedestrian accidents there, the safety record of traffic is actually very good."

'Far too fast'

Tony Bramley, who has campaigned to lower the limit for two years, said the council's reaction has been "appalling" in the light of pedestrian deaths on the road.

He said: "Our main concerns are for pedestrians as well as drivers.

"Coming out on the A120, 40 mph is far too fast and extremely dangerous."

Mr Bass said: "The accident statistics on a road are a measure of one of the issues we have to take into account and the Highways Agency has to take into account."

The Highways Agency said it was carrying out a survey on the stretch of road through Marks Tey.
