Abusive men target of new scheme
Domestic violence - picture posed by models
The annual cost of domestic violence in Devon is about 18m
A scheme to help abusive men change their behaviour is being launched in north Devon.

It is hoped the pilot programme will help reduce domestic violence.

The aim of Resolved to Ending Power and Abuse Relationships (Repair) is to persuade men to come forward voluntarily and ask for help.

Police in North Devon and Torridge were called out to 1,815 incidents of domestic violence last year, with 74% of those against women.

Group work

It is thought the annual cost of the problem in Devon is about 18m.

At present, support for abusive men often comes after a violent incident and Repair wants to step in before that happens.

The programme features both work on a one-to-one basis and sessions of group work.

Peter Rosser, of Repair, said the programme should make a real difference.

"In the long term we hope abusive men will come forward and seek help and that they will be motivated enough to go through the programme and continue the work on their own afterwards.

"We hope it will particularly help to reduce the repeat victimisation that is going on, with police call-outs to the same address."
