Crowds arrive to meet Sir Cliff

Fans said they were used to queuing to meet their idol

Hundreds of Sir Cliff Richard fans have waited at a Derby supermarket for up to eight hours to get an autograph from the singer during a book tour.

Police decided to allow fans to start queuing an hour earlier than planned because so many people arrived.

The fans were at the event looking for a signed copy of the 67-year-old singer's autobiography My Life, My Way.

Julie Hensley from Ashbourne said she had endured rain showers for a chance to see the singer in Spondon.

"We are having a lovely time and we are singing his songs. People have come from around the country so it is a great atmosphere," she said.

Julie Soar from Heanor said meeting the singer "makes you melt" and it was "absolutely fabulous" that Sir Cliff had made the effort to come to a local store.

Her friend Eunice Hallam bought a copy of the book for a friend in New Orleans.
