Scafell is a popular destination for three peaks walkers

In the past six weeks, Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team spent 1,000 man hours on the county's fells, with relatively few call-outs for accidents or injuries.

So far in 2007 the team has dealt with 62 incidents compared to 50 at the same time last year.

This could be reduced with greater awareness, preparation, fitness and experience, according to a spokesman.

He said: "Accidents can happen to anyone regardless of experience but there are more incidents now, particularly people getting lost.

"This is down to poor preparation, a lack of understanding of the basic skills of map work and navigation, over-ambition and low general fell awareness."

Wasdale mountain rescuers are frequently called to assist walkers on Scafell - England's highest mountain.

Thousands of people attempt the three peaks challenge during the summer, climbing Scafell, Ben Nevis in Scotland and Snowdon in Wales.
