Thousands of boat users in the Lake District are being asked for their views on the future funding of those responsible for enforcing byelaws. The consultation exercise is to be one of the largest ever carried out by the Lake District National Park Authority.
Letters, public meetings and telephone surveys will be used to determine how to finance and operate patrol services.
People who take their boats onto Windermere, Ullswater, Coniston, and Derwentwater are being targeted.
Over the next month, Windermere's current 4,000 registered boat owners will be joined by thousands of non-registered users, including yachtsmen and canoeists, in the survey.
The review will only look at lake services and registration fees. It will not consider navigation byelaws or 10 mph lake speed limits.
Sara Clarke, registrations manager, said: "This is a major exercise, and we need all current non-registered lake users to contact us and become involved.
"We feel we have to do this to ensure we are taking all our customers' views and opinions into account."
