The scheme will see the River Valency widened

South West Water (SWW) has been given planning permission to build two pumping stations to serve a new sewage treatment works for the area.

The plans include a new storm pumping station to remove excess flows from the sewerage system during severe rainfall.

The river burst its banks in August 2004, causing millions of pounds' worth of damage in the Cornish village.

The flood defence scheme will lower and widen the Valency River, increasing its capacity when levels are high.

The Environment Agency says the flood defence scheme, which has won the backing of North Cornwall District Council, will reduce the risk of further flooding.

Work starts on 30 October and is due to take two years to complete.

SWW will also build a sewage pumping station that will connect to existing sewers and pump sewage to the new treatment works.
