Council vow to look after elderly
Elderly care - generic
"The incidence of reported concerns was small"
Protection for older people in Calderdale is to be tightened following allegations about the treatment of some private care home residents.

A Calderdale Council spokesman said it launched an investigation after it became concerned about reports received about quality of care.

Coun Peter Coles said 98% of those surveyed said they felt safe.

"But it is up to all of us to ensure residents in all care homes are well looked after," he said.

Coun Coles, chairman of the the council's health and social care scruitny panel, said: "What we have found is a small number of reported concerns."

The concerns mainly related to problems with residents being treated with dignity.

The group has listed 17 recommendations for strengthing care and support arrangements.

These include developing a better system to report complaints and better monitoring systems for staff.

They also stipulate care home managers must ensure residents are treated with dignity and individuality such as allowing people to wear their own clothes and insisting staff knock on doors before entering bedrooms.
