Gale force winds caused waves to crash against coastlines |
The knock-on effect from Thursday's weather disruption in the South East is still continuing with Operation Stack remaining in place on the M20 in Kent. The scheme converts part of the motorway into a lorry park and was brought in amid ferry delays, and French strikes at the Channel Tunnel.
Freight drivers were facing delays of up to four and a half hours to get into the tunnel on Friday.
Delays to ferries leaving Dover were said to be minimal.
Police scaled down Operation Stack on Friday evening, lifting the coastbound closure between junctions eight and nine on the M20, but keeping the closure between junctions 11 and 12 in place.
A spokesman said motorists were still being diverted off and back onto the motorway at the junction eight roundabout in case phase two of Operation Stack needed to be implemented again.
