Fathers 4 Justice were behind the flour-throwing incident

Fathers 4 Justice says it will carry out bridge and rooftop demonstrations similar to those staged elsewhere in the UK.

The group has unveiled a character called the Purple Crusader to carry out the protests.

But the police say any breach of the law will be dealt with accordingly.

Paul Watson, regional organiser of Fathers 4 Justice, claims the demonstrations are the only way to make the government listen.

He said: "Civic disruption is actually going to cost the government something, That's the only thing they are going to sit up and take notice of. We apologise to people if we upset them and accept that our tactics are not for everyone.

"Unfortunately for the people of the North East, it could mean a little bit of disruption. It might be that they are half an hour later for work. During that half hour, we would like them to think about the lifetime that some children go through without seeing their parents.

"This is not us against the public. This is us trying to get the government to sit up and listen to the people in this area."

A spokesperson from Northumbria Police said: "Everyone has the right to peaceful protest and to make their views known, but any protests must be carried out within the boundaries of the law. Any breaches of the law will be dealt with."
