Helicopters were used to tackle the fires last year |
Walkers in the Peak District are being urged to report any fires they see to help keep the national park safe. The Firewatch campaign is asking people to be vigilant to try to prevent a repeat of the fires that devastated moorland this time last year.
Around 20 acres of moorland on Kinder Scout were affected by one of the fires which killed sheep and wildlife.
John Lees from the campaign said potential dry spells throughout the summer pose the risk of serious fires.
He said: "The main thing is to catch them early while they're still relatively small.
"Last year we had some very serious fires - they did enormous damage to wildlife.
"Sheep were killed, nesting birds, and even hares were overtaken by the flames, so it shows how quickly they travelled."
"We're asking the public to join us, so if they do see a fire they'd be good enough to report it - either by telephone or call at the nearest house."
