Powergen cuts hundreds of jobs
Powergen is to make hundreds redundant after merging the East Midlands and Midlands Electricity companies.

The company is closing several bases in the West Midlands in an efficiency drive which will cost up to 600 jobs.

Powergen has started consultations with employees and trade unions and hopes most redundancies will be voluntary.

The company's work will be focused on its distribution business headquarters at Castle Donington and at Tipton in the West Midlands.

Offices closing

The 600 posts are part of the 4,700 workforce in its electricity distribution business Central Networks.

Powergen says the job losses will mostly affect office-based staff.

Powergen has proposed the closure of offices at Birmingham, Hereford, Telford and Northampton, the depot in Ludlow, warehousing at Evesham, and warehousing and workshops in Walsall.

The small corporate office at Whittington will also be closed and activities transferred to Powergen's HQ in Coventry.
