Antoni Imiela denies nine counts of rape and one of abduction |
A 10-year-old girl could have picked up a suspected serial rapist's DNA by coincidence, a court has heard. Antoni Imiela, 49, from Appledore, near Ashford, Kent, denies nine counts of rape against women and girls.
Rebecca Poulet, defending, told Maidstone Crown Court Mr Imiela often had sex with a prostitute on Ashford Common where the girl was raped.
This could have led to the victim coming into contact with his DNA, she told the court in her closing speech.
Mrs Poulet said: "There is a possibility that the girl somehow obtained some semen from this defendant on her thigh, naked as she was on the grass, that did not come from her attacker."
'Description of attacker'
Earlier in the case the jury had been told that tests showed there was only a one in one billion chance that DNA from the victim did not belong to the defendant.
Mr Imeila also denies the kidnap, indecent assault and attempted rape of a 10-year-old girl in Birmingham.
All the offences in Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire, and west London, took place between November 2001 and November 2002.
Mrs Poulet told the court on Friday that the description of the attacker given by the 10-year-old girl did not completely match the defendant.
She also encouraged the jury to use caution when judging the value of DNA evidence linking him to the crimes.
The case continues.
