Education Secretary Charles Clarke has said he has absolutely no plans to scrap the grammar school system in Kent. The system sees pupils in the county still taking the 11-plus exam and has been scrapped across much of the rest of the UK.
Some parents from the county think the system places too much pressure on their children and is harmful to the long-term prospects of pupils who fail the exam.
Mr Clarke spoke during a visit to Chatham to launch a �4m development of the University of Greenwich in the Kent town.
Debating education standards
He said educational standards in Kent were under review, but that did not mean grammar schools were under threat.
The secretary of state said: "We are debating, with colleagues in Kent, the standards of education in Kent.
"The county council takes a very positive approach to that and we have that discussion.
"But there are no plans for any change in the status of Kent schools whatsoever, if people have that view they're wrong."
