 Every headstone in Derby will be inspected for safety |
Safety engineers have moved into the biggest cemetery in Derby to deal with dangerous headstones. Susan Cannan of Derby City Council says that damage and deterioration in some of the gravestones has made them unsafe.
There are 25,000 graves in the Nottingham Road Cemetery and safety checks are likely to take 18 months to complete.
"We will posting information about any memorials that are found to be dangerous and giving people a chance to put them back again."
Cordoned off
Some areas may be cordoned off while safety checks are carried out.
"All headstones will undergo rigorous testing to make sure they are safe," she said.
Any unsafe headstones found will be laid flat to stop them toppling on visitors.
Work has been going on to check the safety of memorials at another location, Uttoxeter Road Cemetery, since August 2002.
The cemetery has been closed except by appointment since that time.
All 50,000 memorials at the city council's six cemeteries will eventually be checked as part of a national plan to make cemeteries safer.
