Disabled access to the building should be ready by spring 2004 |
A disabled woman has been refused access to a civic reception in Bristol because there was no wheelchair access. A primary head teacher for 12 years, Patricia Chubb, 69, recently accepted an invitation to a reception at The Mansion House in April.
But the building cannot accommodate disabled people yet and Ms Chubb was told she could not attend.
A spokesperson for the city council said she was sorry Ms Chubb could not be present at the reception and that disabled access to the building should be ready by spring 2004.
'Rather upset'
Ms Chubb told the BBC it was not the first time she had been denied access.
"I have had an opportunity to go to the Mansion House three times now in recent years.
"And each time I have been disappointed. I am feeling rather upset."
"Other places I go people make the effort and put up temporary ramps," she added.
The Mansion House is the heart of Bristol's government, where the Lord Mayor holds civic receptions.
