A Shropshire regiment has enlisted the help of archaeological experts in the hunt for its missing ceremonial bugles. Representatives of the regiment and experts from English Heritage are in France this weekend to carry out the search.
In the spring of 1940, soldiers of the King's Shropshire Light Infantry were in action in France.
The First Battalion was sent to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force and formed part of the rearguard covering the withdrawal through Dunkirk.
As they retreated to Dunkirk in the face of German troop advancement, the soldiers were forced to abandon the 12 solid silver bugles.
But to prevent the instruments falling into German hands, they were buried in a French garden.
