Haslar has been described as "the worst" of all asylum centres |
Conditions inside a detention centre for asylum seekers in Hampshire have been strongly criticised. Haslar Immigration Detention Centre in Gosport has been described as the "worst of all detention centres" by the Haslar Visitors Group.
Their report claims inmates live in "dreadful, bleak dormitories with little dignity".
Nearly five weeks ago, 42-year-old Ukranian Mikhail Bodnarchuk hanged himself at Haslar on the day he was due to be deported.
'Grim place'
Most of the men being held at the centre have had their appeals for asylum refused and are waiting to be sent back to their own countries.
Michael Woolley from the Visitors Group told BBC Online: "They hang on for months in grim, comfortless places like Haslar - whatever staff do to make things better - because they are desperate.
"This is a story that needs telling to counter the current alarm about asylum seekers.
"It highlights the fact that asylum seekers are not terrorists, but terrified," he said.
About 100 men are currently being held at the centre.
