City floats ideas on pools' future

York residents are being consulted over the pools' future
Residents of York are being given the chance to voice their opinion on the future of the city's swimming pools.

And the city-wide consultation on the future of the Barbican, Edmund Wilson and Yearsley pools will include information leaflets, public exhibitions and an open day at one of the pools.

The project to canvass the views of everyone living in York follows revelations that work to refurbish the pools would cost millions of pounds.

And estimates in the region of 8m to upgrade and refurbish the venues has left the council with a funding dilemma.

The City of York Council has been considering a number of options, including selling the Barbican complex to a developer who would provide an eight-lane pool along with 150 apartments, two hotels and a casino.

That sale would generate around 3m which would pay for improvements to the Edmund Wilson pool in Acomb.

Every household

Consultation leaflets explaining the options for the Barbican Centre will be sent to every household with the council's magazine

Residents will be able to view the proposals at three exhibitions of the proposals at the Barbican Centre on:
Tuesday, 18 March
Thursday, 20 March
Tuesday 25 March

The open day at the Edmund Wilson Pool on Wednesday, 26 March will consider the choices of refurbishing or rebuilding the facility.
