Specials have full police powers |
The contribution of Londoners who help tackle crime as volunteer members of the Metropolitan Police are being highlighted with the first national Specials Weekend. The Met's 700 volunteer police officers will be out for the event which aims to attract more special constables.
Officers based at police stations around the capital will be carrying out a variety of support duties to highlight what they do.
This will include helping police the annual Bafta Awards at the Odeon Leicester Square, central London on Sunday.
Other initiatives they will be demonstrating include an anti street beggars operation planned with immigration officials in Wandsworth, south-east London, and a scheme to tackle commercial burglary in Shoreditch, east London.
Met volunteers are asked to contribute eight hours a week and have the same powers as regular police officers.
If selected they take part in training at the Police Training School in Hendon, north London, which takes place over 18 weekends.
Anyone interested in becoming a Special is invited to visit the Specials recruitment 'Intromet' event at Westminster City Hall on Saturday between 1000 GMT -1800 GMT.
