Waterworks plan for Kent coast
Margate beach
Waste water may be discharged into the sea near Margate
Plans to discharge waste water off the Kent coast have been thrown open for consultation.

Thanet Council has been asked for its views on an application by Southern Water to release waste water into the sea near Margate and Broadstairs.

The plans relate to the proposed Foreness Point Waste Water Treatment Works, near Botany Bay.

The area is known for its spectacular chalk stacks, created through erosion of the chalk cliff-face, and is home to birds including the skylark, fulmar and purple sandpiper.

Public to comment

The decision on whether to approve the application will be made by the Environment Agency.

Members of the public will also be consulted.

Councillor Richard Nelson, leader of Thanet council, said people could see information from the Environment Agency on the council's website.

"Thanet Council will be taking a full role in the consultation process," he said.

"This issue will be brought before next month's extraordinary meeting of full council, when a council response to the consultation will be agreed."

Members of the public can see a copy of the plans at Margate and Broadstairs Libraries.

People have until 4 April to write to the Environment Agency with their comments.
