| Wednesday, 27 November, 2002, 17:06 GMT Factory fire probe starts ![]() 60 firefighters attended the fire at the AGS factory Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire at a Devon double glazing factory. The fire started on the third floor of AGS on the Brunel Industrial Estate in Newton Abbot. A factory worker alerted Devon Fire and Rescue Service and about 60 firefighters from non-striking retained crews in the area attended. The factory and the surrounding area were evacuated and Brunel Road sealed off, but police reopened it at 1300 GMT. Fumes alert Residents were advised to keep their windows and doors shut because of fears of poisonous fumes from plastics in the factory. Trevor Coles, managing director of AGS, praised the work of the fire crews. "They have been absolutely magnificent," he said.
"We were really concerned, when we could see it was getting out of hand, whether we were going to get fire officers here." Mr Coles said that he was confident that production will soon be resumed at the site. Lorry fire Elsewhere two Green Goddesses were called to the scene of a lorry fire on the A399 at Bratton Fleming in North Devon. It is thought that a tyre overheated and set light to the trailer load of coal. Service personnel stationed at Barnstaple and a breathing apparatus tender attended at the scene. And Devon Fire Authority revealed on Wednesday that three red fire engines will be released from training centres to support Green Goddesses operated by the military in the county. Hoax charge Another four will support the Green Goddesses elsewhere around the country. In Exeter, a 14 year old girl was charged with making 999 hoax calls during the firefighters' strike. The youngster was questioned about two incidents where retained fire fighting crews were called out during the early hours of Wednesday morning. The Okehampton teenager was charged with two offences of theft and two offences of making hoax 999 calls. She will appear before Exeter Youth court next week. |
