| Wednesday, 24 July, 2002, 08:02 GMT 09:02 UK Planning wheel inches forward for Eye ![]() The wheel is a popular tourist attraction The London Eye is a step closer to becoming a permanent feature of the city's skyline. Lambeth councillors have voted unanimously to grant the attraction permanent planning permission. The final decision on whether the wheel will remain in its position opposite the Houses of Parliament now rests with the Mayor and the Environment Secretary. The 450-feet London Eye, which was erected to mark the millennium, has attracted more than 8.5m visitors since its opening in March 2000. When it was originally built it only had planning permission for five years. But last week Lambeth Council recommended it should stay in place for at least 25 years, with a review after 20 years to consider whether it should be granted permanent status. A final decision on whether the wheel, which is operated by British Airways, will become a permanent landmark is expected in autumn 2002. | See also: 16 Jul 02 | England 20 Nov 01 | England 27 Sep 00 | UK 05 Mar 00 | Business 28 Apr 00 | UK 01 Feb 00 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
