Rise in sales for DaimlerChrysler
Chrysler vehicle
Chrysler appears to be bucking the downward sales trend in the US
DaimlerChrysler has reported a 3.8% rise in global car sales in 2005, with increases for both its Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz divisions.

The German-US group sold more than four million cars in total, breaking through that mark for the very first time.

Its figures were released as the 2006 Detroit motor show opened on Sunday for the first press viewings.

Like most companies, DaimlerChrysler will be using the event to unveil new production models and concept cars.

Attractive portfolio

Key models unveiled at the Detroit motor show

Chrysler sales in 2005 rose by 4.7% worldwide to 2.8 million vehicles, while Mercedes-Benz numbers were up 1.7% to 1.22 million cars; with DaimlerChrysler saying both units were aided by well-received new models.

"Our young and attractive product portfolio provides a solid foundation for sustainable profitable growth in the future," said DaimlerChrysler chief executive Dieter Zetsche.

Chrysler's US-only sales figures were up 5%, showing that the company is managing to buck the falling sales being endured by its "big three" rivals Ford and General Motors.

Both Ford and General Motors are said to have put an over-reliance upon heavy drinking four-wheel-drive or sports utility vehicles, sales of which have fallen in the US in response to rises in petrol prices.
