Late Junction Sessions | ||
![]() Stian Westerhus & Swati Natekar March 2010 For the March Late Junction collaboration, Norwegian experimental guitarist Stian Westerhus and classical Indian singer Swati Natekar came together for a day at BBC Maida Vale. They had never met, and had had very little contact with each other’s music, but spent a rainy Sunday creating a session that mixes the startling noises of Stian’s guitars with Swati’s soaring voice. Stian Westerhus has worked with Nils Petter Molvaer, Terje Isungset, Jaga Jazzist and many more, and his guitar playing is increasingly hard to classify, with the sounds he makes often sounding nothing like a guitar. His solo album will be released on Rune Grammofon in May. Swati Natekar, is a classically trained Indian singer, born in Jabalpur in India, but now living in the UK. She has worked with artists from Ustad Zakir Hussain to Talvin Singh, and her recent album Destiny Chakra features a journey from classical to popular styles of Indian singing. Swati brought with her an electronic Tanpura, or drone, to which she sings, and Stian performed using an Gibson ES 335 electric guitar, and a baritone guitar, fed through a series of effects pedals and into 2 different amplifier stacks.
